Dear Agatha, First Daughter of the Cosmos
Dear Agatha, First Woman of the Cosmos
When the sun was created
You stepped inside of it
And became a woman
I remember feeling very proud
And at the same time, concerned
That you would burn up
Within its fiery center
But you stepped out again
And laughed
Diving into a pool of darkness
That had formed
Around the orbit
Of a planet
The size of six Jupiter’s
This was before we invented science
Or physics
Or geography
Or creation
You were before creation
And you created
Yourself
And in doing so
You invented your own
Birth
So that was unusual
Agatha, your eyes
Were made of time
Until time needed to be given
To those who didn’t have enough of it
And from then on
They were stars
Just like the sun
And that was when you would look at us
And ask us questions
About yourself
Great minds have been trying to comprehend the Universe
For nearly as long as it has existed
And you, a child of the Universe
Are no different
Than those with questions
That cannot be answered
You wanted to know
Who your mother was
And when we told you
That you had no mother
And no father
You split up
Into several comets
And ran your way
Across the galaxy
For several thousand years
Leaving us wondering
If we would ever see you again
Then on a night
That started as the beginning
Of several alternate universes
We found you
You were sitting on the edge
Of a place we call
Gone
We approached you
With a form
We thought you would find appealing
A constellation
You were fond of
Made up of a thousand separate lights
That, when assembled
Looked like a warrior
Riding a two-headed horse
When you saw our thousand lights
Radiating towards you
You took a step towards Gone
And we were worried
We would lose you forever
So we rode away
On our two-headed horse
Hoping you wouldn’t visit Gone
And that a daughter of the Universe
Wouldn’t go somewhere
Even time won’t visit
Years later
On a voyage
To join two galaxies into one
We saw you at the wedding
Of a religion
And a story
And we asked you
If we could dance with you
You agreed
And we took you out onto the floor
Where we were watched
By stardust
And heat
And elevation
We asked you if you were all right
And you told us
That you had stretched yourself
To every corner
Of our Universe
And still couldn’t determine
Who you were
And why you were here
The music finished
And we moved away from each other
Thinking there was no more to say
But there was so much more to say
Dear Agatha
We just couldn’t hear the words
Over the music
We could tell you them now
But they would fall away off the paper
For words are born
And live
And die
The same as anything else
And if you fail to catch them
When they’re needed
You can never find them again
Dear Agatha
We hope you found the who and why
Somewhere between
The Creation of the Universe
And Now
We hope you didn’t travel back to Gone
And wonder what it would feel like
To close yourself up
Within its walls
We hope you always have the words you want
When you want them
And we hope we’ll see you again
Things have always been this way
And things will never be the way they are again
And somewhere in between those two truths
There’s comfort
Comfort for us all
